Children 5 years old and younger raced their hearts out Friday during the Ogden Tiny Tot Trot.
The tots could hardly contain themselves as they waited at the start line on 14th Street in the downtown. When given the official "Go," they burst into action and sprinted as fast as their little legs would let them ‹ an entire 100 yards to the finish.
Even the youngest of runners made it to the finish line, some with a little help from their mom and dad.
During this non-competitive race, everyone was declared a winner. Each child was given their own medal to proudly wear around their neck.
Before the start of the race, trot participants and their families gathered around WesBanco Arena. Among them were Mike and Jenny Sechrest of Bellaire and their two sons, Trace, 3, and Colt, 2.
Since it was the first year for the boys to participate, Trace had been training in order to make a strong debut.
"I want to win," Trace said when asked why he wanted to run.
Dawn Gainer of Wheeling brought her children, 5-year-old Owen and 3-year-old Eden, to also participate for the first time in the trot. Gainer, who recently moved back to Wheeling from Maryland, said she was looking forward to not only watching her children but talking with others at the event.
"Our kids will run it and have a good time. ... We want to support the whole race," Gainer said.
The Ogden Tiny Tot Trot is sponsored by Ohio Valley Parent Magazine. Kathy Fuller, publisher and editor of the magazine, said she was expecting about 200 children to participate this year.
The annual family-oriented event precedes The Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic Run and Walk activities that start at 7:30 a.m. today.
"It's a good way to get children interested in an important community event for families," Fuller said. "Friday night is a fun family night of activities that kicks off the 20K (today)."
She also noted that the trot is loved by many.
"The neat thing is that so many spectators are out cheering for the kids," Fuller said.
After the race concluded, the children were treated to Domino's pizza and Pepsi products.
They also each received a race packet that included a sports bottle, a magnetic picture frame and a copy of Ohio Valley Parent's Summer Survival Guide.
