WHEELING-Ohio Valley running enthusiasts are being asked to put their best foot forward to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The "Wheeling We Care Mile" will be run at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, in downtown Wheeling. The event is the brainstorm of Ron Green, who announced details during a news conference Wednesday at WesBanco Arena. Green also organizes the annual Debbie Green Race to benefit leukemia.
According to Green the run will be "a tribute to those who lost their lives to Hurricane Katrina," and an opportunity to help those who survived.
"We have a mission," he said.
The race will start on Water Street, in Wheeling, and be run on the same course as the Debbie Green Mile.
Green reported he already has "many sponsors helping out," and all proceeds from the race will go to the local chapter of the American Red Cross disaster relief fund.
Red Cross volunteer Hydie Friend expressed the need for the funds noting Katrina was an unprecedented event.
She said helping those affected by the storm is an enormous effort.
It is even having an effect on some local families, and the Red Cross will be helping not only with immediate needs but also long term needs.
"People in the valley have always had big hearts," Green continued.
"I challenge all runners to come out and take part."
Applications are being sent to all runners who took part in the Debbie Green Race.
They also will be available at local fitness centers and other locations.
The entry fee, set at $10, is "minimal," according to Green, however he is encouraging runners to give more.
George Frazier, director of Centre Town Fitness in Wheeling, said he, and his staff, would be assisting Green with the organization of the event.
"The fact it is only 1 mile should make it possible for all runners to take part," he said. "I hope the weather does not become a factor."
Refreshments will be available during the race. |
