'We Care Mile' to Benefit Katrina Victims

Ohio Valley running enthusiasts are being asked to put their best foot forward to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The "Wheeling We Care Mile" will be run at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, in downtown Wheeling. The event is the brainstorm of Ron Green, who announced details during a news conference Wednesday at WesBanco Arena. Green also organizes the annual Debbie Green Race to benefit leukemia.

Moore Wins Ogden Grand Prix Award

Wheeling's Ricky Moore didn't have the race he had hoped to have on Saturday. But, the Wheeling Jesuit University assistant cross country and track coach still came away a winner.

Kenyans, Russians Dominate

In the men's race, Kenyans took seven of the first eight places, with only runnerup Alene Reta of Ethiopia able to break their dominance. Reta finished in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 48 seconds, just six seconds in back of 2005 champion Francis Bowen, who set a pace of four minutes and 56 seconds per mile over the rugged and humid 13.1-mile that took its toll on many competitors.

Ogden 20K Classic Planning for 30th Anniversary

With the 29th annual Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic Run and Walk now in our rear view mirror, plans are already under way for the 2006 race weekend which will take place on May 26-27. Howard Corcoran, race director met with the executive committee of the 20K Classic late last week to review the recent event and to put the focus on next year.

Young Life Walks New Ground

It was difficult to miss the newest group of volunteers cheering on walkers and runners in this year's Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic. Beside the fact that the group sported fluorescent T-shirts, they were set apart by their enthusiastic support given to race participants. Despite the rain and chilly temperatures, one of the Ohio Valley chapters of Young Life came out to support those running and walking in the day's races.

They were running in the rain during Saturday's 29th annual Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic Run and Walk held in Wheeling, but nothing could stop defending champion Julius Kibet. Not even a loose shoestring.

Ricky Moore Finishes Second

The first two local runners across the finish line for the Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic on Saturday defined determination by showing an unwavering energy even after the long, wet race. Ricky Moore, assistant coach for Wheeling Jesuit University's track and cross country teams, and Kristen Hetzel crossed the finish line about 23 minutes apart.

Tiny Tot Trot Brings Families and Communities Together

Children 5 years old and younger raced their hearts out Friday during the Ogden Tiny Tot Trot. The tots could hardly contain themselves as they waited at the start line on 14th Street in the downtown. When given the official "Go," they burst into action and sprinted as fast as their little legs would let them ‹ an entire 100 yards to the finish.

Olteanu Wins Mile

Ovidiu Olteanu, Romania's only sub four-minute miler, did it again Friday night as he just beat the rain drops at the finish line in winning the Ogden Mile, one of the prelude events to today's 29th annual Ogden 20K Classic Run and Walk in Wheeling.

City Races To Pave Trail Portion

The latest portion of the city's Heritage Trail is just steps away from completion. A stone base is being set on the newest section of the Heritage Trail in preparation for pavement. City Engineer Conrad Slanina said he expects the actual paving work to start soon.

Construction Alters Race

Concerns for the safety of the runners and walkers due to ongoing construction along National Road resulted in a decision to alter the course for the 29th annual The Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic on Saturday, May 28, in Wheeling. The decision was announced following discussions among officials from the race committee.

Smoking Ban OK'd in Ohio County

By summer, patrons of bars and restaurants in Ohio County no longer will be able to light up with their drinks or dinner. On Thursday, the Wheeling-Ohio County Board of Health unanimously adopted a new clean indoor air regulation that prohibits smoking in restaurants and bars throughout the county. The new regulation will take effect Friday, May 27. However, not all members of the audience expressed support of the issue nor of the regulation.

Ogden 20K Entry Forms Available

Entry forms are in the mail and registration is under way for the 29th annual Ogden 20K Classic Run and Walk to take place May 28 in downtown Wheeling. Race director Howard Corcoran pointed out late last week that forms have been mailed to every runner and walker who participated in this event over the past three years.
