The Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic already is the top racing event in the Ohio Valley.
Still, race organizers felt felt there was room for improvement for the 29th edition of the annual race.
So this year, runners and walkers alike will receive an added bonus upon their completion of the grueling trek throughout the streets and hills of Ohio County.
Eric Anderson, race committee member, explained that this year at the finish line, a variety of new items will be available to help runners and walkers recover more quickly.
‘‘We are going to have bottled water and gatorade for the participants,’’ said race committee member Eric Anderson. ‘‘We haven’t had that in the past.’’
A total of 1000 combined bottles of water and gatorade will be waiting for the runners and walkers at the finish line.
Also, fruit, Eat ’N Park cookies and wet towels will be available.
Race organizers will have 500 pieces of either bananas or oranges, as well as 200 cookies waiting to help the runner regain some energy.
The benefit of having wet towels to help cool down the runners should also make for a nice addition as well as the obvious health benefits.
‘‘I have seen these things at other events,’’ said Anderson. ‘‘It is a nice feature for the runners and walkers.
‘‘It is really nice when you are going over this kind of distance to have a fuel replenishment as far as fruit and sports drinks waiting for you when you finish.’’
Helping pave the way for these improvements were Defelice Care, World Gym in Bellaire, Dr. Paul Weidman and Dr. Jeff Hoepfner.
Anderson said having these added perks at other races opened the door to bringing them to the Ogden Race.
‘‘Other races have had them and we felt it was time to add it to our race,’’ he said.
‘‘Just a little something extra for the runners.
