The Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic’s Hall of Fame membership will swell to 21 Saturday following official induction ceremonies at WesBanco Arena for 10 of the race’s long-time participants plus the City of Wheeling, which is being honored for its support and contributions to the success of this event.
Announcement of the Class of 2005 was made in the May 22 edition of the Sunday News-Register.
Included on the list was one highly-popular former USA road racing star Tom Fleming along with local runners and Ogden 20K supporters such as Dr. Lee Jones, Leo Miller, Wayne Barte, Susan Mortakis, Marti Stephan, Frank Monteleone, the Rev. Robert ‘‘Bob’’ Cole, Ike Calissie and Herb Baker. Dr. Jones and Miller will be honored posthumously.
Race Director Howard Corcoran was more than pleased to be able to add the City of Wheeling to the race’s Hall of Fame list.
‘‘All city departments play a role in the success of the race, especially the police, fire operations and water departments, he stressed.
And this has been the case since the start of the race 29 years ago, according to Corcoran. ‘‘Many road racing events across the country have been canceled because they did not have the ongoing support of their city governments like we do here.
‘‘We have good leadership now and dating back to the beginning of this event. The city has always understand the huge impact the Ogden Classic has on the economy,’’ Corcoran added.
Dr. Jones and Miller were involved with the founders of the Wheeling distance. So was Barte who, along with being a long-time runner , also previously served as Wheeling’s city manager.
The addition of Monteleone and Cole elevates the number of Ogden Ironmen Club members to four who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame with the others sure to follow in subsequent years. Last year’s inaugural class included Ironmen Steve Habursky and Mitch Toto.
Monteleone is a Wheeling native but now resides in Massillon, Ohio. Cole formerly served as a minister at one of the local churches and currently lives in Lost Creek, WV near Buckhannon.
The Ironmen Club consists of 16 runners who have participated and finished each of the previous 28 classics.
Among the other 2005 Hall of Fame inductees are area racing standouts Stephan, Mortakis, Calissie and Baker.
Fleming, was one of America’s top runners in 1977 when he came to Wheeling to participate in the first distance race. He was joined by the likes of Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter. While Tom retired from competitive racing to concentrate on coaching high school age youngsters and some professional runners, he has continued to be a part of the Wheeling race scene for many years.
On the many occasions when the event was televised live, Fleming served as the color commentator. In recent years he has returned to Wheeling to serve as master of ceremonies and in other capacities during the post-race banquet held at WesBanco Arena.
America’s one-time ‘‘King of the Roads,’’ Bill Rodgers and Patty Catalano Dillon, who established an American 20K record during one of her winning runs in Wheeling, were obvious choices as the first U.S. stars to be inducted into the Ogden 20K Classic Hall of Fame.
Bill, a three-time men’s open champion and four-time masters titlist here, has been a participant in Wheeling for all but two of the first 28 races. He now limits his competition to the shorter 5K Run and Walk, which he will compete in for the second time on Saturday.
Dillon returned to Wheeling last May after a 20-year absence and so thoroughly enjoyed the experience that she is coming back to take part in this week’s event. She also is expected to run in the 5K.
Rodgers and Dillon led a 2004 Hall of Fame Class that also paid tribute to the 53-year newspaper career of the late Bill Van Horne, former News-Register sports editor whose coverage of the Wheeling race helped this event gain international attention.
Other local runners who made up the charter group of inductees were Joe Sarver, Lance Tarr, Mike Hudimac, Bruce Smith and Becky Droginske.
‘‘Our local runners are especially part of the tradition of the Ogden 20K and it is the race committee’s pleasure to be able to honor them with membership in the Hall of Fame,’’ Corcoran said. |
