A Wheeling woman earned her first overall victory Saturday in the Ogden Newspapers 5K Run and Walk, facing less than favorable conditions and a race restart.
A steady drizzle that became heavy at times plagued the morning event, which started at 8:15 a.m. But while spectators found themselves cold and wet, participants said it was an enjoyable race despite the weather.
"This is like my third year (participating in the event)," said Brenda Colvin, 46, of Wheeling, who placed first among the women with a time of 34:06. "Last year, I was third."
Colvin said she previously has placed first in her age division but that this was her first overall win.
"I'm surprised," she said, adding that winning feels "great."
Colvin said she walks local trails to keep in shape.
"I just try to keep up for health," she said.
Colvin said a false start to the race, caused by some 5K runners missing the first turn in the course, helped break the tension and made the race easier. She said the win has boosted her confidence and she will consider participating in the 20K Walk next year.
Another local participant took the overall victory for the men. John "Mouse" Yoker, 47, of Barton, posted a time of 28:21.
Yoker said he competes in all the local events between April and November.
"I've been walking for five or six years, and I've run for probably 10 years before that," he said.
Yoker said he has no formal training regime, aside from walking as much as he can.
"I just get out there and walk every day," he said. |
