20K Walk Record Is Broken
by JOSH STROPE Staff Writer

Susan Randall set a course record at the 2006 The Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic Run and Walk.

In 2007, she became the first female to walk the course in less than 2 hours.

Randall turned in her best performance yet at the race, shaving four minutes off her winning time from 2006 to win the race for the second straight year.

This year’s time of 1:57.41 not only set a new women’s course record but was actually the fastest time posted by any walker in Saturday’s event.

The men’s 20K walk winner was Don Slusser of Monroeville, Pa. in 1:59:06.

For Randall, her personal best is 6 minutes faster than the time she walked Saturday, but that also doesn’t include a hill the size of 29th Street.

“My best 20K is 1:51.25, but for (Saturday) with that hill, I’ll thrilled. That hill was long and big,” Randall said.

“It was almost 4 minutes on my PR for the course so I’m happy with my time. My goal is to walk under two hours and I beat my goal so I’m happy about that.”

Randall, 32, might be from Beavercreek, Ohio, but she feels very much at home walking in front of the people of Wheeling.

“It’s looking like today’s going to be a good day. All the people were cheering so loud and giving me energy. I walked real good and I felt great,” Randall said.

“The people are so friendly and make me happy to come back. I will definitely be back next year.”

But before Randall comes back for the May 2008 race, she has another goal in mind.

“My goal is to walk and qualify for the Olympic trials,” she said, “but so far the best day is ahead yet. I’m working on it.”

Randall beat out Jamie Brooks of Connellsville, Pa. and Wheeling’s Tammy Paull. Brooks was second with 2:06.52, while Paull posted a 2:12.18.

It was Randall’s second road win in three weeks as she won the George Rogers Clark Trail 5K on May 9.

She is a member of the Wright Triathlon Club of Dayton, Ohio. Her next race will be the Sugar Creek Trail 5K in early June.

Slusser, 55, is also a former winner of the Ogden 20K Classic, having won the 2005 race with a time of 2:07.58.

After skipping last year’s event, the former distance runner from Indiana (Pa.) University decided it was time to reclaim his title and did so, beating second place James Lapinski of Blacklick, Ohio by 13 minutes.

George Welch of Mineral Wells, W.Va. was third.
