Outdoor Banquet Brings Them In
by FRED CONNERS Staff Writer

The Ogden Newspapers 20K Classic Awards Luncheon was an open-air event Saturday as it was held for the first time outdoors at the Wheeling Heritage Port Amphitheater.

The 5K Run and Walk awards were presented shortly after the events were completed. That event was followed by the 20K Run and Walk Awards Luncheon at noon.

Assistant Race Director Heidi Clark said the event was held outdoors this year because organizers were seeking a more festive atmosphere.

“We thought this type of attraction would cater to the public more and be something for the whole family, and with the weather it turned out perfectly,” Clark said.

Food for the event came from DeFelice Brothers Pizza and Quiznos Subs of Wheeling. The menu included cold drinks, pizza, chicken wings and Italian, turkey and roast beef subs.

Live entertainment for the event was provided by local band Easy Street.

Race Director Robert “Scat” Scatterday thanked race sponsors for their financial support and all the volunteers who worked to make the event a success.

He presented a special “Director’s Award” to Clark and Tim Birch, co-director of operations for the race.

Members of the Ogden Ironmen Club also were recognized. They are men who have run in every Ogden 20K since the event started 31 years ago.

Robert Nutting, president and chief executive officer of the Ogden Newspapers Inc., recognized the runners and walkers and thanked all the volunteers who helped with the event.

Nutting also complimented Scatterday and Clark for their efforts in planning and organizing the race.

Awards were presented for all age groups and categories during the afternoon festivities.
